Most people who have health insurance have it through their employer. The business pays for some, if not most, of the premiums and the employees pay deductibles and out-of-pocket costs. We probably do not pay as much attention to the actual price of medical care as we do the cost of other consumer items—it is our own bottom line we care about. However, it may be time to pay more attention.
The fact that the charges for our visits to the doctor, hospital and pharmacist are mostly paid for by our insurance does not make us any less likely to get both overcharged and underserved. It is past time to start devoting attention to not just what is charged but also how the health insurance companies, and the medical community, decide what to charge and why. Spoiler Alert: it is not based on the free market.
